Carinthian Institute for Climate Protection
To improve the implementation of climate protection targets in Carinthia and the development of adaptation strategies, the Carinthian Institute for Climate Protection (Kärntner Institut für Klimaschutz or KIKS), was established as a non-profit association and sited in the Department 8 (Competence Centre Environment, Water and Nature Protection) of the Provincial Government of Carinthia. Founder members of the association are the Natural Science Association of Carinthia, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Klagenfurt as well as the Provincial Government of Carinthia.
The function of the KIKS is, alongside the development of scientific basics assisting the Government and the Parliament in the area of climate protection and adaptation to climate change as well as to review laws, regulations, projects and fundings for their climate effectiveness. This is not just about the implementation of the Austrian climate strategy in Carinthia and the active participation in the national adaptation strategy, but also to support country-wide initiatives on these issues and the participation in national and international research and demonstration projects.
